Leaping into history
Preparing for his second long jump at the Cassville Relays on April 16, Wildcat senior Ashton Wheeler had a feeling he might could make history. His personal record at 6.3 meters, Wheeler leaped into the Cassville history books with a jump of 6.71 meters, surpassing Devin Linenbrink, who held the record with a 2010 jump of 6.58 meters.

It seems that spring has sprung here in the Ozarks! Daffodils and dogwoods are in full bloom, the grass and trees have returned to their lively green selves, and a buzz down any road out of city limits will likely show you new spring calves and lambs at their mothers’ sides. As warm and enjoyable as the weather has been, as a born and bred Missourian, I know that the sweet spring weather can quickly turn sour.
4 qualify for Speech and Debate nationals
Four Cassville High School (CHS) Speech and Debate students have earned their spot at the National Speech and Debate Tournament, set for June 16-21 in Des Moines. During the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) district qualifying tournament, the following students placed first or second out of 25 competing school districts.
Lady Wildcats log 400 minutes of shutout soccer
A high school soccer game is 80 minutes long, and for more than four of them in a row this season, no one could score on Cassville. The 400-minute shutout streak included wins over Parkview, 2-0, and McAuley Catholic, 3-0, a 0-0 tie with Pittsburg (Kan.), then a victory over Monett, 3-0.

There are a lot of questions asked at the annual Cassville Education Fund Trivia Night, 60 to be precise, but one aspect of the evening is never questioned — you will have a blast. I have covered Trivia Night almost every year in the past decade, and it seems to get better and better every year.
Jon Horner: Happy World Creativity and Innovation Day
What a great time to celebrate creativity and innovation! Sunday was World Creativity and Innovation Day, and this month we got to witness the Great American Eclipse, which definitely didn’t disappoint after the massive publicity build up ahead of the event. The eclipse and the excitement building up to it was very similar to the excitement in our nation during the NASA Moon program in the late 60s.

30 YEARS AGO: WATCH THE BIRDIE--Cassville’s Flat Creek Emu Farm will soon be the subject of a video presentation designed to promote the fast rowing type of farming. In the photo above, Jerry Crowe, owner and a video crew doing the filming go over some of the subjects that are to be covered in this segment of the film. Crowe said the video will be used with other Flat Creek Emu promotions to anyone interested I purchasing the program. It will go through the Processes of raising the birds and their market value. All this was well and good, and proceeded well, until the mischievous birds began picking at the belts of the crew or breaking the equipment and sometimes picking their pockets of handkerchiefs.
Wesley Wizards conquer Trivia Night
The Wesley Wizards, a team representing the Cassville United Methodist Church won first place at the Cassville Education Fund’s Trivia Night on Friday, winning the overall competition. Newsflash!, a team sponsored by the Cassville Democrat, won the “Smarty Pants” award for most trivia questions answered correctly.

News Briefs, April 24
Lawrence and Barry County Democrats will meet on Thursday at the Angus Branch Steakhouse, located at 114 Chapel Drive in Monett. The meeting will start at 7 p.m.
