Janet Mills: Prioritize people over presents
We witness the last Halloween Jack-o’-lanterns flicker out and it’s as though a switch flips and suddenly the holiday season is upon us. It’s the time of year when stores transform overnight.

Autumn is falling away as fast as the leaves on our trees, and with the change in weather will come a change in sports seasons. I’ve been covering high school and collegiate football for 15 seasons now, starting in 2009 stringing for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette to this Friday, and hopefully more this year, now as publisher of the Cassville Democrat.

Rain doesn’t melt fun at Oz-themed Cook-Off

Rainstorms at about 11 a.m. dampened the day, but cooking competitors held on to finish out the tasting and judging despite the weather.

Lady Trojans end season strong
Wins were tough to come by early in the season for the southwest volleyball team, but with work and experience, the improvement down the home stretch was reflected on paper. The Lady Trojans (10-19-3) won 7 of their final 10 games and saw their season come to a close with a 3-1 loss to Marionville.

The Cassville boys and girls cross country teams traveled to Lamar Saturday to compete in the Class 3, District 2 meet. Despite the chilly and rainy weather, every runner recorded a personal best.
Report: ‘Thousands’ of chickens DOA at George’s
County law enforcement are being urged by PETA to investigate and charge those responsible for the deaths of “thousands” of chickens that died while being transported to George’s during extreme heat in June. A USDA memorandum of interview was submitted to address the “alarming number of dead on arrival birds at George’s Processing” on June 28 and the loss of process control.
Purdy man charged for rape
A Purdy man has been arrested on four felony charges after allegedly breaking into a victim’s home and attempting to rape the victim. Fabian Perez-Garza, 22, of Purdy, is charged with first-degree rape or attempted rape, first-degree burglary, second-degree domestic assault and second- degree kidnapping.
Charges for controlled meth buy
A Missouri State Highway Patrol controlled drug buy in March has resulted in the arrest of a Mt. Vernon woman for first-degree drug trafficking.
SLUDGE group formed
Last week, five neighbors of Denali Water Solutions’ Evans storage basin near Fairview formed SLUDGE, an LLC dedicated to fighting Denali’s practices of storing and land-applying its waste beneath their noses. The group will host its first public meeting on Nov.

Chili and Salsa Cook-Off winners announced
First State Bank of Purdy won first place in Judge’s Choice Best Chili at the annual Cassville Chili and Salsa Cook-Off on Saturday.
