‘Gentle Giant’ made mini; slabs severed for memorial
AJ Hunter uses a skid steer to move a portion of the trunk of the ‘Gentle Giant’ tree at the Bayless/Salyer House, which was felled during a windstorm in Cassville on May 26. Tree Tech Tree Service donated its services to remove the massive pine tree, which was about 100 years old and the tallest in Cassville for a period of time. The remains of the pine were loaded into a trailer and taken to the city of Cassville’s storm vegetation debris drop-off point east of the Cassville Municipal Airport. Slabs from part of the trunk were also cut off to use later in a memorial at the house.
FEMA Disaster Recovery Center coming to Cassville
A state/federal Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open Monday in Cassville to give Missourians impacted by the late May storms an opportunity to talk face-to-face with disaster recovery specialists.
September marks National Hunger Action Month

Cassville still stymied in Seneca
Early mistakes and losing the war in the trenches led to a loss in Cassville’s first football game of the season, falling to last year’s Class 3 runner-up Seneca on the road, 55-16. Clay Weldy, Cassville football coach, said the team knew going into the contest that Seneca was a strong opponent.

Extension to host annual picnic
The Barry County Extension Council will host its annual picnic on Sept. 10 at the Memorial Park in Cassville.
Sales tax revenues drop in August
The generally predictable summer slump in sales tax revenues surfaced in August as income to Barry County cities and county governments dipped overall by 5% from a year ago. Barry County’s seven cities collecting sales tax took in $812,010.58 in August, down 3% from a year ago.
Taking aim at two
Having made history last season with its first-ever district title, the Cassville softball team is embarking on a new campaign this season with loads of experience and a new coach at the helm. Cassville is coming off one of its best seasons ever, going 16-15, tying the most wins on record for the team, set in 2011 and tied again in 2023.
Truck & Tractor Pull benefits Shrine
For the fifth consecutive year, the Stumpff Family Event Center has donated 10% of the gate proceeds from the Barry County Truck & Tractor Pull to the Shell Knob Shrine. All funds donated go to the children’s burn center and patient travel expenses. Organizers Donnie and Teresa Stumpff thank the event’s attendees, participants and sponsors.
2 Cassville staff certified as School Safety Specialists
The Cassville school district has two staff members now certified as School Safety Specialists. John Lueckenhoff and Dylan Klewer attended the recent School Safety Academy hosted by Missouri School Boards’ Association’s Center for Education Safety.
