ross Myron Cross PHD, 94, passed away at his home, in Berryville, Arkansas. He was born in Illinois, to Ray Eugene Cross and Dina Geldmeier CrossKinder, who preceded him in death.

Local beekeeper suffers unusual loss of hives

Beekeeper Kevin Young and his wife Bonita, of Exeter — marketers of K&B Honey — lost 85 percent of their beehives over the winter due to circumstances no one is able to explain, least of all Kevin Young, who has kept bees for over 20 years. “Going into winter, I had 225 hives; each of those hives had about 50,000 bees in it,” Young said.

Salary hikes boost sheriff’s office staff

More than six months of collection of the half-cent law enforcement sales tax has given the Barry County Sheriff’s Office an immediate boost, and Sheriff Danny Boyd hopes full staffing will come with firmer budget numbers toward the end of this year. The tax measure, intended to fully fund the sheriff’s office with its own sales tax, passed in April 2022 and began collection in October 2022, giving the county a few months of collection with which to project this year’s income.

A Cassville graduation tradition carried on this week. For those who couldn’t see from the stands, quite a few of the Class of 2023 handed High School Principal Tyler Willis a rubber ducky of some kind. I wasn’t keeping count, but I bet by the end of Sunday’s ceremony, he had at least 50 new rubber friends, if not more.

In the past 10 years, I can’t even begin to count how many graduations I have attended. Locally, I shoot at least three or four every May for the paper, but this year, I have another special one of my own to attend, and one that will look vastly different from the Barry County way.

16 earn All-Conference honors

Cassville saw 16 of its boys and girls track and field athletes medal at the Big 8 Conference Meet, and the teams are now focused on the stair steps to state. Nine Wildcats and seven Lady Wildcats earned All-Conference status in Monett on May 2, and the boys set a new school record in the 4x400 relay.

Electric vehicle chargers coming to Roaring River

The Department of Natural Resources continues to reach new milestones in its goal of expanding access to electric vehicle charging stations in the Show-Me State. Within Missouri’s share of the Volkswagen Trust Fund, about $6 million was made available for EV charging infrastructure installations.

11th Street to close

Project preparing to cross over Main With open trench construction making progress along 11th Street last week, construction this week will move closer to and eventually across Main Street, with multiple street closures expected. Work will continue in the 300 and 400 Blocks of 11th Street, between East and Harold streets.
