Barry County sales tax dips in January

Sales tax income in September to Barry County cities and the county government inched upward from a year ago, creeping back to the 2022 level but still 4% under the peak at the pandemic surge in local sales in 2021. The seven Barry County cities collecting sales tax received $869,577.68 in September, up 1% from a year ago.

The generally predictable summer slump in sales tax revenues surfaced in August as income to Barry County cities and county governments dipped overall by 5% from a year ago. Barry County’s seven cities collecting sales tax took in $812,010.58 in August, down 3% from a year ago.

Halfway through 2024, sales tax reports for Barry County show the local economy is generally holding even with one year ago. While three smaller cities showed double-digit drops from the immediate post-pandemic sales totals, overall sales tax income rose from last June.

April sales tax revenues to Barry County dipped for the third time in four months. With the biggest drop since December 2024 impacting more than half the municipal recipients, the sales tax disbursement reflected a general return to pre-pandemic normalcy instead of steady growth.
