Southwest Spelling Bee winners named
The Southwest school held its 5th annual spelling bee March 8, 2023. Students in grades 1-6 competed against their classmates to see who would qualify to compete against the students in the other two classrooms in the grade level spelling bee.

Garners recognized as Music Advocates
During the Music in Our Schools program this spring, Kim and Charles Garner were presented with the Music Advocacy award. Both Kim and Charles are graduates of Cassville High School and were involved in the fine arts programs as students.

Bohmkes place in pickleball regionals
Ethan Bohmke and Tyson Bohmke, both of Cassville, participated in the 2023 USA Pickleball Middle States Diamond Regional Championships in Springfield on Sunday. They won Silver (2nd place) in the Men’s Doubles Group (3.0:19+). There were 425 registered players from across the nation who competed in multiple skills groups, including several professional level players. Placing second, the Bohmkes have qualified for the National Pickleball Tournament (Punta Gorda Classic) in Punta Gorda, Fla., on Oct. 20-22.
Change of assessment notices mailed
The Barry County Assessor has mailed out change of assessment notices, and taxpayers may have questions concerning these changes in assessment figures. If a taxpayer wants to challenge their change in assessed valuation, they should inquire about the issue before July 10.
2 charged in Purdy school burglary
Two individuals have been charged in connection to an alleged burglary at the Purdy School district in April, during which cash, a ring and other items were stolen. According to a Purdy Police Department press release, on April 22 at 1:12 a.m., two suspects broke into the Purdy school building, located at 201 Gabby Gibbons Drive.

— 30 YEARS AGO: In recent years at least, this year's strawberry crop is one of the best, according to Dennis Epperly of near Cassville. He termed the quality and yield off his patch about the best in the past 10 years." Epperly said he suspects there are less than six total acres of berries in Barry County this vear. Years ago, there were hundreds of acres and berries were shipped out of several associations by the carload. Epperly's patch is in the Corinth community and is mainly devoted to U-pick operations. As he holds a display sample of berries, individuals picking for their own supply are pictured in the background. The Epperly patch is about an acre in size and is yielding good according to the grower. For the strawberry shortcake lover, the unfortunate part of the season, it's too short!

Signups for the 22nd Annual OACAC Back to School Fair will be held from May 30 to June 30 by appointment only at OACAC Barry County Neighborhood Center, located at 10826 Farm Road 2172 in Cassville. Students Pre-K through 12th grade are eligible for the Fair.
