Construction picks up near Main Street
Intermittent rains late this last week diminished the city’s progress on its wastewater system upgrades, as the directional bore subcontractor did not start as expected, postponing until Monday. For the week of May 15, Public Works Director David Brock said residents expect open trench excavation to continue in the 300 Block of 11th Street (between East Street and Mill).

Local beekeeper suffers unusual loss of hives
Beekeeper Kevin Young and his wife Bonita, of Exeter — marketers of K&B Honey — lost 85 percent of their beehives over the winter due to circumstances no one is able to explain, least of all Kevin Young, who has kept bees for over 20 years. “Going into winter, I had 225 hives; each of those hives had about 50,000 bees in it,” Young said.
Salary hikes boost sheriff’s office staff
More than six months of collection of the half-cent law enforcement sales tax has given the Barry County Sheriff’s Office an immediate boost, and Sheriff Danny Boyd hopes full staffing will come with firmer budget numbers toward the end of this year. The tax measure, intended to fully fund the sheriff’s office with its own sales tax, passed in April 2022 and began collection in October 2022, giving the county a few months of collection with which to project this year’s income.
Electric vehicle chargers coming to Roaring River
The Department of Natural Resources continues to reach new milestones in its goal of expanding access to electric vehicle charging stations in the Show-Me State. Within Missouri’s share of the Volkswagen Trust Fund, about $6 million was made available for EV charging infrastructure installations.
