30 YEARS AGO: STARTING TO WORK — Tuesday morning wasn’t much of a chore, with three or four inches of snow on the ground, but there were windshields and windows of vehicles left out over night to be cleaned.

50 YEARS AGO: DONORS PORTRAIT AT ROARING RIVER — Members of the family of the late Dr. T. M. Sayman presented an oil painting to Roaring River State Park Saturday. The late Dr. Sayman gave the initial park acreage to the State of Missouri in 1928. Attending the presentation ceremony from the left are: Norman Chaney, park concessionaire; Joe R. Prairie is a sweet pup who was dumped on a gravel road and is now waiting for a loving family to take her home to her own little house. She is sweet and gentle and still getting accustomed to shelter life, but we hope she isn’t here long. She is a black and white mixed breed (not sure what) and currently weighs 13 pounds. She will grow to be a medium-sized dog. Her estimated DOB is Nov. 29, 2023.

Meet Kaida! She is a curious, fun loving, energetic gal. She does well on a leash and is well behaved.

40 YEARS AGO: MORE LIKE A WINTER WONDERLAND — Roaring River State Park’s opening last week presented this sight... more like a winter wonderland...than a trout opening. Fishermen were obviously not out in numbers as they might have been had power outages and heavy snow not visited the area. Dressed for the low temperatures, most of the usuals were there, with some newcomers who just couldn’t resist the March 1 call.

30 YEARS AGO: FUTURE FARMERS - National FFA Week begins Sunday, February 19, and continues through the week of Washington’s birth-day. Cassville’s FFA chapter is 96 members strong, according to chapter advisor Gene Courdin, making it one of the high school’s largest clubs.

Who doesn’t love a potato? French Fry came into the shelter with siblings Au Gratin, Crinkle, Curly Q, Hashbrown, Tator Tot, Waffle, Wedge and Mom, Potato.

30 YEARS AGO: BIG BUCK — Josh Rose, 6 of Washburn, looks on as his buck’s rack is scored for the record books. Josh’s grandfather, Harley Rose, who is pictured next to Josh, gave his grandson the deer head when Josh was six days old.
