District softball seeds set

Three Barry County softball teams will compete in Purdy this week and next in the Class 1, District 5 tournament, hosted by Purdy High School.

The Lady Eagles (16-7) took the top seed in the bracket and face No. 8 Galena (1-15) at 2 p.m. on Friday in the tournament opener.

Exeter (12-10) nailed down the No. 2 seed and faces No. 7 Verona (1-12) on Friday at 5 p.m. Wheaton (11-7) took the No. 5 seed and will play for an upset of No. 4 Hurley (7-6) at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The final quarterfinal matchup is No. 3 Crane (8-7) against No. 6 Billings (5-8), set for 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Semifinals are Monday at 5 and 7 p.m., and the championship is set for Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The top two seeds have met once this season, on April 10 in Exeter, with Purdy coming away with a 7-1 victory.

Southwest (8-8), in Class 2, District 6, has the No. 7 seed and opens play on Friday against No. 2 Mt. Vernon (217). The remainder of the bracket includes No. 1 Diamond (22-6) against No. 8 Pierce City (4-12), No. 4 Miller (16-3) against No. 5 Lamar (14-7), and No. 3 East Newton (9-7) against No. 6 Sarcoxie (6-14).

The semifinals are Monday at 4:30 and 6 p.m., and the championship is Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. All games will be played in Mt. Vernon.

Southwest fell to Mt. Vernon at home on April 8 by a score of 19-0. the Lady Trojans have not beat the Lady Mountaineers since 2018, with four losses since that victory.
