Jig On the Water, June 29

Roaring River looks very good right now, running at 53 CFS.

This is fantastic. We really needed this kind of water. The dry fly fishing has become very good. With the hot, dry weather, we are now having a bit of rain here and there, but that doesn’t hurt anything. The beetle fishing and the ant fishing have been great. There are still plenty of elk hair caddis and bluewing olives hatching off every day. There is still a decent Trico hatch every morning that starts at about daylight and goes till about 9 o’clock. Crackle backs are still working very well. The holographic green and grizzly has been working the best for me.

We are starting to see if you hoppers on the water. If you prefer nymph fishing, put a pheasant tail or a copper John about 2-1/2 to 3 feet deep under an indicator and that will usually catch you several fish a day. As usual, little zebra midges and small pheasant tails work all day long if you don’t mind throwing eggs; the very small size 18 and 20 eggs are working very well also.

If you are fishing jigs, micro jigs are working very well right now; the black and yellow, the olive and the white are catching a lot of trout at the moment with regular jigs. The same colors are working fine on the woolly bug jigs; it’s been mostly tan, black and yellow and olive.

If you’re fishing, plastics, orange, pink, white, and cheese yellow have all been good colors. The Power bait grubs are still catching lots of trout. The yellow and brown were probably better this week than the pink, but they all seem to catch fish.

First thing in the morning, a rooster tail type spinner works very well for about 30 minutes, maybe a little longer on a good day; the best colors this week seem to be white, pink, the skunk and the glitter black little crank baits will also work well.

Now that the water has come down and cleared up, it seems to be very important to use 2- or 3-pound line. You can still catch fish with 4-pound, but you will not catch as many normally; the 2-pound just seems to be less noticeable to them; keep your drag set loose and 2-pound line works well.

Good luck on the river this week. Have fun!
