Carl Schell, center, with Carl Schell Construction, hands down a piece of plywood to Frank Diaz while working on the facade of Zachary Fields' building on Main Street on Monday. Under the wood was a "Hardware" sign made of single-pane glass. The former Haddock & Meador Hardware Store operated through the 1965, when owner Fred Meador sold it to his employee, John Haddock. The store was named Haddock Hardware from 1965-1968, when it was sold to Johnny O. Reid, who operated it until 1973. At that time, the store featured guns and ammunition, typical hardware items, a paint and wallpaper center, new Franklin wood stoves, dynamite, farm implements, crock ware, and housed a plumbing company and a well drilling company in the rear of the building. The hardware store encompassed the footprint that is now J&L Hair Fashion salon and Stumpff Barbershop. From 1974-1977, the space was Stella’s, a burger restaurant with foosball and pool tables, along with a jukebox. In 1977-1978, it was divided and built out for J&L and Stumpff.
