Barry County Presiding Commissioner Questionnaire: Chad Johnson

1. Why do you want to win this position?
I love Barry County. Over the last ten years, I’ve had the opportunity to serve alongside a lot of great people and organizations throughout our communities. I’ve seen firsthand what makes this county special and I want to help protect those things while also helping us prepare for the future. I believe Barry County’s best days are still ahead of us and I’d be honored to play a role in that.
2. What are your qualifications to be Presiding Commissioner?
I’ve spent much of the last decade serving in volunteer leadership roles throughout Barry County. I’ve served on the Cassville School Board, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Barry County Fair Board, South Barry County Ambulance Board, Cassville Community Foundation, Mineral Springs Special Road District, and other community organizations. More importantly, those experiences have allowed me to work alongside people from all walks of life and better understand the needs of our county.
3. What are the biggest financial challenges facing the county currently?
One of the biggest challenges is the uncertainty surrounding future funding and tax policy at the state level. County government has to continue providing essential services while being prepared to adapt to changes that may impact local revenues and budgets.
4. Do you believe the commission is currently spending taxpayer dollars efficiently? Why or why not?
Overall, yes. County government has a responsibility to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars, and I believe the current commission takes that responsibility seriously. That doesn’t mean there aren’t always opportunities to improve, but I believe decisions should be made thoughtfully and with the taxpayers in mind.
5. What areas of county spending would you prioritize, and where would you look for savings or cuts?
My priority would be making sure our county offices, emergency services, roads, and infrastructure have the resources they need to serve residents effectively. Before looking at cuts, I would want to understand where efficiencies can be found and make sure taxpayer dollars are being used in the most effective way possible.
6. What role should the county play in future growth in Cassville, Monett, the lake area and other smaller towns in the county?
The county should be a partner. Every community in Barry County has unique needs and opportunities, but we all benefit when we work together. I believe strong communication and collaboration between county government, cities, schools, businesses, and community organizations will help us accomplish far more than working independently.
