Excessive heat warnings issued
The National Weather Service in Springfield has issued two excessive heat warnings for today and Friday, with highs expected to drop to the 80s next week before climbing again.
Pulling for Bryson
When Jason Harling’s house burned down, he didn’t know what he was going to do. The generosity of the community in helping him get back on his feet is being paid forward on Saturday, as Harling has organized a benefit truck and tractor pull for Eagle Rock man Bryson Wilderbuer.

High winds bring down trees, limbs
Overnight storm Sunday causes 1,500 power outages Wind gusts pushed through Barry County in the overnight hours Sunday, leaving a trail of mostly tree and limb damage in northeast and central barry County. David Compton, Barry County Emergency Management director, said the majority of the damage was in the Monett, Purdy, Butterfield and Wheelerville areas.
Domestic calls rise in county
The Barry County Sheriff’s Office is experiencing an uptick in domestic dispute calls, and the closure of a pod in the county jail has resulted in more inmates being held out of the county. Danny Boyd, Barry County sheriff, said deputies are responding to five or six domestic disputes per day on average, higher than normal and countywide.
Hall Theatre in Phase II of state cleanup program
The city of Cassville hopes to have a clearer timeline of the Hall Theatre building demolition by mid-September, following Phase II of the Brownfields Voluntary Cleanup Program. The structure, located on the northeast corner of the Barry County Courthouse square, burned in a March 1, 2022, fire that remains an open investigation.
Woman airlifted from fiery crash
Two juveniles were injured and an Aurora woman was arrested and airlifted from the scene of a vehicle wreck on Highway 39, six miles south of Aurora, after the vehicle caught fire at about 7:40 p.m. According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Kiera Moore, 34, of Aurora, was driving a 2009 Ford Escape northbound when her vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, then caught fire.
Back-to-school sales tax holiday this weekend
Ahead of the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in Missouri is encouraging consumers to shop small. The sales tax holiday, which begins on Friday and runs through the weekend, is a great opportunity to support local businesses, NFIB State Director Brad Jones said in a statement.

Following the tree and limb damage from Sunday’s overnight storm, Barry County Sheriff Danny Boyd said deputies are looking to volunteer their time to help in the cleanup. Any person who has tree or limb damage in their yard and is disabled or physically unable to clean it may call the office at 417-847-6556 and ask for Boyd to schedule a cleanup.

Riding into a second century
Not many people live to see 100 years old, and when Wheaton resident Floyd Hughes hit the mark on July 19, he knew the best way to celebrate — riding his bike through town. Starting at his home by the Methodist Church, which he joined with his wife more than 70 years ago, Hughes and more than 50 family and friends rode a few blocks down East Santee Street, across to Main and back around to his home.
