1. How should crime victims be kept informed through the court process?

Crime victims or their family receives a packet of information when a case is filed. They are then signed up for notifications through the court system regarding all hearing dates. Questions are answered as they arise and meetings are conducted to ensure they are kept aware of the stage of the case. The criminal justice system can be a lengthy process, and frustrating to victims, so it’s vital that victims understand the various stages of the proceedings.

2. What is your philosophy on transparency, and how transparent should the prosecutor’s office be regarding charges filed or cases that are dropped?

The prosecutor’s office has rules that must be followed regarding cases. Information regarding cases that are dropped can only be shared with law enforcement or the victim. This is to ensure that the victim’s privacy is protected. Cases that are filed are open to the public through Missouri’s casenet system, again however, victim information in certain types of cases is protected. While I understand “transparency” is the latest catch phrase for some folks, a victim’s privacy outweighs any need to fulfill the public’s curiosity.

3. What steps do you hope to take to reduce crimes against children, specifically surrounding abuse and sex crimes?

I’ve work closely with law enforcement and the Missouri Children’s Division for over 11 years  in an effort to ensure sufficient evidence is collected and perpetrators of crimes against children are prosecuted. Unfortunately, these types of crimes are often perpetrated by family or friends of the child, making it at times more difficult to get cooperation from the family. We all have to be vigilant and report suspicious behavior to the proper authorities.

4. What can be done to improve communication and cooperation between the prosecutor’s office and local law enforcement agencies?

For over 11 years, I’ve had wonderful relationships with various law enforcement agencies that work in Barry County. I’m currently on my third sheriff and second police chiefs in Monett and Cassville. While we don’t always see eye to eye, I believe we have a good working relationship- all of us hoping to make Barry County safer for its citizens.

5. How do yo plan to recruit and retain qualified staff for the prosecutor’s office?

I will continue to use the various resources available through the Missouri Office of Prosecution Services, along with word of mouth from the good citizens of Barry County to staff the office. We currently have a great team that takes their jobs very seriously and strive to ensure criminals are appropriately punished.
