Two inmates at the Barry County jail have completed the Lifeskills Cognitive Awareness course offered by the Community Care Coalition. Christopher Coburn, and Justin “Todd” Taylor, are the first inmates to complete the course and were presented certificates of completion by Barry County Sheriff Danny Boyd and Course Coach Teresa Phillips. This cognitive-behavioral program, offered through a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and Coalition, is a structured, evidence-based program that helps participants understand and change negative thinking patterns that can lead to destructive behavior. Through guided workbook lessons and discussions with their coach, students learn critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and emotional regulation skills. The goal is to promote personal accountability and help individuals to make positive, lasting changes in their lives. This course is the first of several to be offered. Upcoming programs include Job Readiness, Parenting, and Substance Abuse, with the possibility of expanding to additional classes in the future. “We commend Chris and Todd for their commitment and determination, and we look forward to the continued impact of this partnership in building brighter futures,” a Coalition press release said.
