Exeter student body invited to help celebrate achievement

A star of the Exeter softball team has made her intentions known after she graduates in May, signing to play softball at State Fair Community College in Sedalia.

With the whole Exeter student body invited to attend, Crumpler said the signing on Friday was exciting, but also a bit scary.

“It’s really nerve-wracking, but it’s like a dream come true,” she said. “It’s good to have the community and all my friends here to support me, and I feel super overwhelmed with love.”

In the spring, Crumpler played 23 games for the Lady Tigers, sporting a batting average of .537 and an on-base percentage of .684. She totaled 29 hits and 5 home runs, adding 30 RBI and 32 runs scored.

“Natalie is talented and can refine her skills at the next level,” said Ashley Fly, Exeter softball coach. “Her bat says a lot, and even when she’d get in a slump, she can refocus and be successful.

“She also knows the game behind the plate: knowing the pitcher’s calls and when to go for a pick-off. She knows the game, and I’m proud of her and offer my congratulations.”

Crumpler said she looked at a few schools, and what pushed her to State Fair Community College was her experience on a visit.

“I talked to the coach and really liked her and the team,” she said. “The coach’s mindset is what I want and will help me reach my goals.”

At Exeter, Crumpler said it has been a joy playing softball, especially advancing the program to reach two district title contests.

“Being on the team in general has been my favorite part of playing at Exeter,” she said. “It was also great to be part of the program making it to the district championship — it was fun to be part of that whole process.”

Though she is still undecided on a major, Crumpler said she’s most excited to get to play and learn at the collegiate level.

“It’s great to be able to play a sport I love and also further my education,” she said.

Fly said the signing had been a long-time coming, with conversations about college ball starting in Crumpler’s freshman year.

“This is an awesome experience for her, and we’ve talked since she was a freshman about playing at the next level,” Fly said. “She looked at a couple places, but this is the best fit for her, and I’m excited for her to experience the next level in the game, and also have that college experience.”

Fly also said the whole student body was invited to the signing to help show what hard work can do.

“This experience with the student body breeds excitement for what kids can do at the college level and the possibilities and opportunities kids can have if they work hard,” Fly said.
