Barry County Presiding Commissioner Questionnaire: Chad Johnson

1. What opportunities does the commission have to encourage business growth?

The biggest opportunity is building strong relationships and maintaining open communication. When local governments, businesses, schools, and community leaders are working toward common goals, it creates an environment where businesses can grow and succeed.

2. How can the county support small business and agriculture?

Small businesses and agriculture are the backbone of Barry County. The county can support them by being a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars, maintaining infrastructure, supporting public safety, and helping preserve the quality of life that makes people want to live, work and invest here.

3. What options does the county have when it comes to the spread of industrial sludge as fertilizer, and how can you balance supporting farmers who use sludge, adjacent property owners and the environment?

State law largely governs agricultural practices, including the use of biosolids. The county’s role is to ensure regulations are being followed and that concerns from all parties are heard. I believe communication is critical. Farmers, neighboring property owners, regulatory agencies, and local government all deserve a seat at the table when addressing concerns and finding solutions.

4. If elected, how would you measure success at the end of your term?

Success would be measured by trust. If residents feel heard, county offices have the support they need, communities are working together, and Barry County is in a stronger position than it was four years earlier, I would consider that a successful term.

5. What is one county issue you believe receives too little attention?

Partnership and communication. Barry County is full of good people doing good work, but sometimes we operate in separate lanes. I believe stronger communication and collaboration between communities, organizations, and county government can help us solve problems more effectively.

6. How would you improve communication between the commission and county residents?

We have more tools available today than ever before. I would look for practical and low-cost ways to better share information with residents through technology such as social media, push notifications, Facebook , community meetings, and direct communication. People shouldn’t have to wonder what’s happening in their county government. They should be able to easily find information and stay informed.
