Lewis Royer: Wheaton School Board Election Questionnaire

Age: 49

Current Occupation: Cattle Producer

Past Experience: Broiler Manager, Tyson Foods; Sales Manager, QC Supply

Education: B.S. Animal Science, Missouri State University

1. Why do you want to win this position?

Having grown up in this community, I have a deep connection to Wheaton and the School. I feel it is important to advocate for public education and the needs for the students in our district. I believe serving on the school board is an important way to serve our students and community.

2. If elected, what is your number one goal on the school board?

If re-elected, my goal would be to continue to work with the other board members through governance by policy and budgeting oversight, and Superintendent oversight.

3. What areas of the school district do you think need improvement?

I think the ever changing funding debate for public education puts us in a position of financial uncertainty from year to year. Having a Superintendent who keeps the board informed of state and federal funding, along with the budgetary constraints that places us in, is one of the most important areas in which the board deals. Financial health of the district touches all corners of the school and any improvement is always needed.

4. What capital projects do you believe the district should pursue?

We have some existing infrastructure items such as heat and air units that are on a proposed schedule to start replacing due to age causing expensive repairs and obsolete parts. Also, there is one more roof replacement that is needed. I think keeping facilities up to date and in good repair is ever ongoing and is another focus of the administration and school board.

5. What do you feel is most important for raising the quality of education provided by Wheaton schools?

I think the easy answer is more money to attract teaching talent, development and retention, but when that is maximized to the ability of the district, I think we have to have a safe educational environment and strong culture of community inside the school. This being led by strong administrators and supported by the school board. GO BULLDOGS!
