Southwest volleyballers earn 10th victory on season

Led by Seniors Marissa Freeman, Emma Outhouse and Addison Park, the Southwest volleyball team picked up wins over Exeter and Purdy last week to reach the 10-win plateau.

Freeman had 38 kills, 30 digs, 6 aces and a block to help the Lady Trojans to victories 9 and 10. Freeman leads the team in kills with 244 kills and aces with 42.

‘Missy has really worked to improve her game, especially the serve, serve reception and defense,’ said Steve Voyak, Southwest coach. ‘Everybody knows she can kill the ball, but she is expanding her game, and college coaches are taking notice.’

Freeman was recently named to the All-Tournament team at the 42nd Annual Southwest Volleyfest.

Outhouse made all 24 of her serves against Purdy and finished 31-for-32 over the two matches with 4 aces. She added 22 digs and 13 assists and improved her overall serve percentage to 93.3%. Outhouse is also second on the team in assists with 130.

Parker made all 17 of her serves against Exeter and added 11 digs and 8 kills in the two matches combined. Parker is second on the team in kills with 122.

‘We knew Addie could hit,’ Voyak said. ‘But, she is trying to improve on defense and in reception and she is making strides with each match. Emma has really worked hard defensively to improve, She is not our fastest player but has made up for it with instinct and volleyball IQ.’

Junior libero Olivia Hnem was the other standout in the two matches with 30 digs, 26 receptions and three aces. She leads the team in digs (448), receptions (498) and serve percentage (93.8).

‘No libero covers more ground defensively than Olivia, none, ‘ Voyak said. ‘She gets everything, every time. We don’t have 10 wins without her.’

Southwest has a busy end to the season with three matches this week against Hurley, McDonald County and Galena. They host McAuley Catholic on Oct. 20 before starting Class 2, District 11 Oct. 21 against Sarcoxie in the quarterfinals at 5:30 at Miller High School.
