Bomb threat in Washburn
Washburn City Hall was the target of a bomb threat on July 24, and investigation ultimately determined there were no explosives on the property.
James Morgan, Washburn police chief, said he was investigating a separate threat by voicemail at another location on July 23, and he called the number from the City Hall phone.
“I believe that’s how he got City Hall’s number,” Morgan said. “He called the night before at about 10:12 p.m., and at about 10 a.m. [the morning of July 24], I checked the voicemail and heard the threat.”
Morgan said entities responding included the Barry County Sheriff’s Office, Washburn Fire Department and Bentonville, Ark., Bomb Squad.
“They cleared the building and around it, and no device was discovered,” Morgan said. “[The suspect] basically just said there was a bomb in the building and it would go off at noon.”
Morgan said the scene was cleared at about 12:15 p.m. The area of Main Street was evacuated during the investigation. No one was injured, and there is not threat to the public, Morgan said.
Morgan said the investigation into the caller’s identity is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident may contact the Washburn Police Department at 417-826-5242.
