Jig On the Water, May 25

Roaring River has came up again. It was 217 CFS as of Sunday morning, and it was expected it to come up more Monday.

Powerbait will again be one of the best baits to use to catch trout. The pink and the yellow have been very effective the last few weeks when the water has been high. You will need to use a No. 10 hook and about a quarter ounce to a half ounce weight. Depending on how much water the river gets, you may be able to get away with 4-pound monofilament line again for a while.

Other baits that will work will be the white Powerbait eggs, the orange Powerbait eggs, and the pink Powerbait eggs. These generally work better in the higher murkier water. Because of the extra scent they possess, the trout are easily able to find them.

Rooster tail spinners will be decent early in the morning, but you may have to add extra weight to them. I sell 1/8-ounce rooster tails, but even then, you may have to add a little extra weight to keep them down deeper, and it is pretty important reel them just as fast enough to keep the blades turning.

Fly fishing will be a little spotty for a few weeks. Big streamers, mop flies, egg patterns, San Juan worms and larger nymphs will probably be needed for a few days. Pats, rubber legs, copper Johns and nymphs with some flash on them will be pretty effective the next few weeks. On the fly rod, I will be using 9 foot 6X leaders for at least the next few weeks.

With the higher water, spoons will be pretty effective as they sink quicker and stay down longer. They will be catching a lot of fish for the next week or so.

Good luck on the river this week. The fishing will not be bad. You will just need to use more weight and fish a little slower. In two or three weeks, we will be back to some decent water.
