Jig On the Water, May 11

Roaring River’s water is still running strong, at 125 CFS.

Dry fly fishing is getting better every day. A few fish have been caught this week on beetles, ants, blue wing olives and caddis. Nymphing is still a good way to catch trout. Black zebra midges, copper Jones, gold ribbed hares ears, pheasant tail nymphs, and burlaps have been pretty good this week. 6X tippet is fine right now, and 9’ leaders.

We’re still catching plenty of trout on black, olive, and 10 woolly buggers. Mop flies, San Juan worms, Glo balls, and John Deere green jigs are pretty good right now. The water is still kind of dirty, but you can start seeing trout now. It’s still kind of difficult to sight fish, but getting better every day.

Most people are still getting away with 4-pound line on their spinning equipment, but it won’t be long and we will need 2-pound again. The water is dropping slowly.

Spinners have been working pretty good. The best colors have been black, skunk and brown.

Marabou jigs are still working fairly well. The bigger ones are a little better right now because they get down a little quicker. White has been good, and black and yellow 10 and olive green has been pretty good all week.

Plastic baits are still catching lots and lots of trout. The 1-inch Powerbait grubs have been very effective all week. The yellow and the pink seem to be working the best, but I have had a few people that have been catching them on the ground. Plastic eggs have been working pretty well in white, orange and pink.

There’s still several people fishing the small trout spoons, and they are catching several fish, especially first thing in the morning, but they are doing pretty well throughout the day as long as they are fishing slow and deep near the bottom.

Good luck on the river this week. Have fun! Remember this next weekend is free fishing on Saturday for the children under 16 years of age.
