Barry County Youth Camp Celebrates 60th Anniversary

Barry County Youth Camp is proud to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year, marking decades of providing unforgettable summer experiences for children in need.

Since its founding in 1965, the camp has been a beacon of hope, offering a safe and fun environment for children ages 7-11 who might not otherwise have had the opportunity to attend summer camp.

Funded entirely by generous donations from local civic groups, businesses, churches, and individuals, the Barry County Youth Camp has remained free of charge for qualifying children. The current amount needed per camper is $200. This support ensures that every camper enjoys a week filled with adventure, friendship, and enrichment.

Each year, campers participate in a variety of engaging activities, including crafts, games, and outdoor adventures. Nutritious meals are provided daily to keep young minds and bodies energized for the fun ahead. The camp experience culminates in a grand carnival, a favorite tradition where campers celebrate their week of newfound friendships and cherished memories.

“This camp is more than just a getaway; it’s a place where children can grow, explore, and simply be kids,” said Sarah Pfitzner-Mindack, camp director. “Without the support of our amazing community, BCYC would not be possible. We are incredibly grateful to our donors for making this possible year after year.”

As Barry County Youth Camp marks this milestone, organizers invite the community to join in the celebration. An alumni dinner will be held on May 26 at 5 p.m. at Camp Smokey, located in Roaring River State Park. Interested parties should RSVP to the contact information below. All former staff, counselors and campers are invited.

“In honor of our 60th year the Barry County Museum and the Monett Museum have set up displays with camp memorabilia and pictures from throughout the years,” a BCYC press release said. “We encourage everyone to stop by to view and reminiscence in the history of BCYC.”

Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, everyone can play a role in continuing this cherished tradition for future generations.
