Jig On the Water, May 4

Roaring River was at 211 CFS on Sunday morning, May 4th.

This is still pretty high, but very fishable, Powerbait and other assorted plastic baits worked well all weekend in orange, cheese yellow, pink and white.

Quite a bit of weight is still needed; 1/4 and 1/8 egg sinkers are needed to keep power bait on or near the bottom of the river. We are still ok with 4-pound line, but the water is getting more clear every day.

We are starting to see a few trout looking up more. A few trout were caught this past weekend on hoppers and beetles, and even a few reported some were caught on blue wing olives.

When the river hits 100 CFS, the dry fly fishing should be very good. Black buggers were best for me this weekend, but a lot of trout were caught on egg patterns, mop flies, San Juan worms and heavier nymph patterns, spoons, small crank baits and heavier jigs.

Best jig colors were black/yellow, olive green, tan and white.

Good luck on the river this week.
