Jim Erwin: Spiritual birthday celebrations

Everyone has a physical birthday; a day in which one celebrates their physical birth.

When one becomes a Christian, they have a spiritual birthday. This is a day when someone celebrates their rebirth.

We celebrate and commemorate a physical birthday. Yet, how can one celebrate and commemorate a spiritual birthday? What rituals or activities can one have to reflect upon their spiritual rebirth?

Here are three ways to celebrate and commemorate a spiritual birthday:

Experience communion

It is said that baptism is a one-time public event that tells the world that a person has been reborn.

The Lord’s Supper (or Communion) is a private event that one celebrates often.

One should celebrate communion with other Christians. One great way to celebrate a spiritual birthday is to gather a group of believers and share in communion.

Engage in mission

Social media has a way of helping a person connect with special causes. You can use your physical birthday as an opportunity to engage with a passion project or give to a certain cause.

One such way is to ask others to donate money for your birthday to cause you believe in.

You can ask others to do the same thing for your spiritual birthday. Pick a certain charity or mission you are passionate about, give your time and money, and ask people to join you in doing the same.

Energize your passion

A spiritual birthday is an excellent opportunity for you to look at what you are passionate about. Reevaluate what inspires you.

Take a spiritual gift inventory. Review your relationships in the church. Reflect on the priorities that God has for you in the Bible.

Ask yourself what you are good at, and see where you can use that for God.
