Humphries leads Trojans track at recent meets

Robert Humphries, a junior at Southwest High School, earned seven medals in the last three track meets in Pierce City, Spokane and Cassville. In Pierce City and Spokane, Humphries finished runner-up in the 800, as well as a second and a third in the mile. He also anchored a third-place finish and personal record in the 4×400 relay (3:52.10) at Pierce City, and he set a personal record in the 800 (2:11.35) and the mile (4:52.59) at the Spokane Classic. “He keeps driving his numbers down,” said Steve Voyak Southwest track and field coach. “He knows he has to peak at the right time, but he has been steady in his progress all year and both of these races are loaded with top-notch talent. He needs to move even more in these two weeks leading up to the post-season.” In Cassville, Humphries was third in the 800, setting another personal record in 2:10, and fourth in the 1600 (4:55)

Other Southwest highlights from Pierce City:

• The 4×400 girls finished second in 4:58, and the 4×800 girls finished fourth and set a personal record in 11:54. The five girls that make up the two relay teams are senior Cally Bowyer, juniors Juliauna Sierra, Abigail Floyd and Alexis Borwick, and Sophomore Kali Jones, who also set a personal record and scored in the 800.

• Senior Traven Walkingstick was sixth and scored in the discus, and Sophomore Eva Velasco set a personal record in the shot put.

Other Southwest highlights at Spokane:

• The boys 4×400 relay team was sixth in 4:00.97.

• Freshman Ivan Suchowski was fifth in the high jump at 5-3.75

• Freshman Cecilia Goines was eighth in the mile in 8:41.37.

• Freshman Vic Tellez was ninth in the mile with a personal record of 5:28.47.

• Walkingstick was ninth in the disc at 84-11.

• Senior Rachel Willer set a personal record in both the shot put (60-03) and discus (25-02), finishing 11th and 12th.

Other Southwest highlights from Cassville:

• Ezra Sprowes took fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.90 seconds

• The girls 4×800 team took fourth place in 11:59

Wildcats win home meet

The Cassville boys track and field team took first place at the Cassville Relays on April 18, led by two individual firsts by Caleb Leach and two relay wins. The wildcats score 109.5 points, besting Reed Spring’s 99 and East Newton’s 67. Full results from the meet include:

Lady Wildcats first in Cassville Relays

The Cassville girls track and field team won top team honors at the Cassville Relays on April 18, with senior Jolie Evans showing out for fans with another school record. Evans, who broke the 1600-meter school record in Aurora, added the 800-meter to her list, finishing in a time of 2:25. As a team, Cassville won the event with 104 points, defeating Galena with 91 and Reeds Spring with 78. Full results from the meet include:

Purdy streak ends at 10

The Purdy baseball team (18-5) saw a 10-game win streak snapped on Tuesday against Billings, 2-1. The Eagles defeated Blue Eye and Galena prior to the loss, 12-1 and 10-0, respectively. Against Blue Eye, Ezequiel Garcia led the Eagles with 3 hits and 6 RBI, also pitching five innings and striking out 7. Against Travis Hughes led in hits with 2, and Alexis Aldaba drove in 3 RBI. Hughes pitched 4.2 innings for Purdy, earning 6 Ks. The Eagles played Seneca and Diamond on Saturday, falling 2-1 in eight innings to the Indians and defeating the Wildcats 10-4, then hosted Wheaton Monday and Spokane Tuesday. They return to action on Friday at East Newton.

Lady Tigers bag win over Pierce City

The Exeter softball team (7-6) rebounded from a loss to Purdy with a home win over Pierce City on April 17. Outhit 12-8, the Lady Tigers made the most of their opportunities and Pierce City’s 7 errors. The Lady Eagles led 5-1 midway through three innings, but Exeter tallied 3 runs each in the third and fourth to go up 7-5. Pierce City tied the game in the fifth, then took an 8-7 lead in the sixth, but the Lady Tigers added a pair and shut Pierce City down in the final frame. Kaitlyn Weiser led Exeter with 2 RBI. On the mound, Dawnee Sorensen pitched 3.2 innings with a strikeout, and Zeanndrea Brown went three innings with one K. Exeter played in the Jasper Tournament over the weekend and traveled to Verona on Monday. The Lady Tigers travel to Wheaton on Thursday.

Southwest bests Spokane, Verona

The Southwest softball team (6-9), earned a pair of wins last week over Spokane, 17-4 and 16-4, respectively. A 6-run first set up the win over the Lady Owls, with Kaleigh Tull producing 3 hits and 2 RBI, and Riley Flippo and Raeli Miles getting 2 RBI apiece too. Tull pitched three innings and struck out 5, and Jacee Durossette went two innings with 3 Ks. At home against Verona, Miles had 3 hits and 4 RBI and Alissa Russel produced 3 hits and 5 RBI. Durossette went three innings with 5 Ks, and Tull struck out 4 in two innings of work. Southwest played Blue Eye on Friday, earning a 17-6 victory, East Newton on Monday and Purdy on Tuesday. The Lady Trojans are back in action at home on Thursday against Pierce City.
