Trout stocked in Roaring River
The Roaring River Hatchery has stocked 6,000 trout for the 2,000 anglers expected to converge on Roaring River State Park Friday. Now overseeing his third Opening Day, Roaring River Hatchery Manager Brad Farwell said on Monday the river is fully stocked.
Sales taxes down for month
Sales tax income to Barry County cities and county government held fairly even in February compared to a year ago, despite the shift resulting from Monett's use tax pulling down the overall county total.
New concessionaire named
The winds of change are whipping through Roaring River State Park, as a new concessionaire has been awarded the state's contract. Roaring River Adventures LLC, a division of ExplorUS, a hospitality management company operating in parks across the country, will manage the lodging, dining, retail and meeting facilities at Roaring River State Park beginning this year.
Slaughterhouse smorgasbord headed for Barry County
Two waste-hauling companies have more than 150 proposed permits with the Department of Natural Resources, which if approved, could result in a proliferation of odors similar to land-applied poultry-processing residuals on area land last year.
Smokestack toppled
The Old Possum House at East and 9th streets saw its longstanding smokestack fall to the ground last week. The structure, which was the original electric power to Cassville and the C&W Railroad in the 1800s. It has since been home to businesses Maggie’s Place, the Alley Bar, Memories and Caroline’s, but had fallen into disrepair. The Wildcat Jazz and Cassville High School state band musicians will preset live music at Zone 4 Mini Golf and More on March 16 from 4-6 p.m. Admission to this outdoor music event is $5 per person, and 10 percent of all Zone 4 sales on March 16 will be donated back to the Band Boosters.
Cassville tops out PAC
The Cassville school district marked a significant milestone in the construction of its new Performing Arts Center (PAC) project with a topping out ceremony held at the construction site the morning of Feb. 19.
Cassville powerhouse being demolished
A last remnant of Cassville’s railroad is undergoing demolition. Jim Hiers and his wife, Lora, who own and operate Special Enterprises, an excavation business based in Cape Fair, submitted the winning bid of $68,800 to the City of Cassville to tear down the long-abandoned, derelict structure at the corner of East and 9th Streets.
Hall to fall
Nearly two years after being destroyed by a fire, the Hall Theatre’s demolition is imminent. The city of Cassville has been in a legal battle over the building, and Owner Travis James has failed to comply with a court order to demolish the structure, allowing the city legal standing to take it down.
Exeter FFA planting seeds for the future
Seeds of knowledge are being planted by members of the Exeter FFA Chapter in local classrooms this spring as elementary students participate in Agriculture Education on the Move (Ag Moves). Through Ag Moves, an educational program of Missouri Farmers Care, students learn how their lives are connected to agriculture through hands-on learning led by passionate educators in their classrooms.
