Wheaton senior gets Soroptimist scholarship
The Soroptimist Club of Barry County has selected Zoey Martel as the recipient of the 2023 Violet Richardson Scholarship. Martel is a graduate of Wheaton High School. She plans to study nursing at the College of the Ozarks. The Violet Richardson Scholarship is awarded annually to a senior woman in Barry County that serves as community volunteer. Martel volunteers at her church, for local food drives and blood drives, sold drinks for the fire department fundraiser BBQ event, raised money for the Power of Pink Breast Cancer Drive, picked up trash and served meals to elderly community members. The mission of the Soroptimist Club of Barry County is to improve the lives of women and girls in the local community. Cassville graduate awarded Olin J. Brattin scholarship
Tyra Campbell, a 2023 graduate of Cassville High School, has received the Olin J. Brattin Scholarship, administered by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.
Cassville native competes at Formula SAE
Each year, the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) challenges students to create small, formula-style cars and bring them to their competition to be tested, judged and raced. This year, teams took their creations to Brooklyn, Michigan, and competed at the Michigan International Speedway from May 16-20.
2 local grads receive Shelter scholarships
The Shelter Insurance Foundation awarded $1,500 scholarships to Isaac Hadlow and Elijah Holenda, graduates of Cassville and Wheaton high schools, respectively. Shelter Agent Terri Lynn DeGraffenreid-Brattin sponsors and partially funds this scholarship.
Drury announces Spring 2023 Dean’s List
Earning a spot on Drury University's Dean's List is a significant accomplishment. The recognition means a student earned a grade point average of 3.6 or greater (on a 4-point scale) while carrying a full-time course load of 12 or more semester hours at Drury, a top Midwestern university, according to US News & World Report.
Local students earn distinction
Wichita State University has announced the names of 3,273 students who were on the WSU dean's honor roll for spring 2023. To be included on the dean's honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Bright futures receives $966 donation
Roaring River State Park Concessionaires, Jim and Carmen Rogers, have donated $966 to the Cassville R-IV Bright Futures program. The Rogers’ donation reflects the money collected by the sale of children’s trout tags on March 1, Opening Day of Trout Season.
SONIC Drive-In donates to Southwest
In honor of May's Teacher Appreciation Month, SONIC Drive-In's SONIC Foundation donated $1.5 million to match all public contributions made to requests on DonorsChoose, a national nonprofit that allows individuals to donate directly to public school classroom requests submitted by teachers.
Robbins graduates MVC
Maggie Robbins, of Washburn, graduated May 6 during the commencement ceremony for Missouri Valley College. Robbins, who majored in marketing, was one of 218 graduates at MVC this spring. Robbins was also among more than 470 students earning a spot on the dean’s list in the spring semester.
Essay award-winners announced
The Elks Lodge 1042 in Holiday Island, Arkansas has announced that Cassville Intermediate students, Cara Leach (first place), Kobhe Ware (second place) and Liliana Burgess (fourth place) are this year’s winners of the annual Elks Lodge essay contest. Students were asked to complete an essay answering the question “What is your American Dream?” All three winning essays advanced to the state competition.
