40 YEARS AGO: SPOOKS THAT WON PRIZES — Halloween produced these prize winners in costume judging. Rotary’s annual street party Monday night for in the front row are: India Brown, third, Andrew Bieder, second; and Wendy Mller, first. In youngest judging. Middle grouping found Eric Lassiter, third; Jeremy Marple, second and Dustin Hinton, first. In youth to adult judging had winners, back row, of Eldon Ridenour, third; Joe Simpson and Louise McCord, second and Greg Fields and Greg Cope, first. The local civic club also sponsored games with cash prizes and served traditional Halloween refreshments for those attending in charge of events were Dr. David Cupps and Dr. Dale Assing. 30 YEARS AGO: HALLOWEEN DISPLAY — Ghosts swing from the trees and a scarecrow sits sentinel in the yard at 1003 Townsend in Cassville. Gary and Sara Swearingen’s Halloween decorations cause many a driver to slow down as they pass by, especially when the Swearingen’s dog Radar is found napping in the scarecrow’s lap. Mr. Scarecrow is pictured above with three of his friends perched nearby. Clockwise, beginning at the left, are: Christopher Swearingen, the Swearingen’s 4 year old son; Justin Ramsey, 5, son of Roy and Vickie Ramsey of Exeter; and Mark Hitchcock, 4, son of Deanna Hitchcock of Cassville.

30 YEARS AGO: EMERGENCY CREWS AT CRASH — Units of two Cassville emergency agencies are in this photo as they went into action last week following a Highway Patrol helicopter crash at the municipal airport.

50 YEARS AGO: It was easy to tell the defensive backs from the linemen Friday night at Lamar. The backs had partly clean jerseys. This five-some was typical during one of their breaks late in the Big 10 contest played on a rain soaked field. From the left are: Mike Marshall, Hal Smith, Max Henbest, Rick Bratin and Tom Moss. Brattin for the second week got Wildcat of the week defensive honors in the game.

30 YEARS AGO: PRAYER AMONG SMOKING EMBERS — There were still same flames at the burned out Calvary Baptist Church Sunday morning when the congregation gathered at 10 a.m. to pray for a quick rebuilding of their church. Whisps of smoke fanned by breezes drifted over the group ever reminding them of what four arsonists had caused at their near Exeter church. The structure was a total loss, despite the efforts of both Exeter and Cassville volunteer fire fighters. Only solid concrete portions of the building remained standing after the blaze. Pastor Richard Jones, Sr., said the congregation has made arrangements for temporarily holding services in the Cemetery Building in Exeter. Cottage prayer meetings will be held at the homes of church members. The rural church northwest of Exeter had just under 100 members. Democrat file photo

50 YEARS AGO: SOME TO COLD STORAGE — Part of the apples, not immediately destined for a market, picked this year at Vollenweider Orchard go into huge cold storage facilities.

50 YEARS AGO: In addition to special assignment duties, these members of the Barry County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse represent the area in various events through the area.

30 YEARS AGO: Cassville can be as big as she wants to or as small as desired, depending on which way her visitors might want to enter town.

50 YEARS AGO: Cassville city patrolmen, Eddie Boyd, left, and Danny Spyres, right, display a new radar unit now in use by the local police force. Part of the unit is mounted on the patrol car while the officers hold the read-out unit. A preliminary trial of the equipment shows considerable speed on local streets. City council action in leasing the equipment for a four month period before making a purchase also set rules for officers to follow in its use.
