Exeter volleyball team building culture in program

The Exeter volleyball team finished its first season under new Head Coach Jordy Long with a 4-27-1 record, however, Long believes the Lady Tigers are at the precipice of a bright future for the program.

Long gave the season a C grade, citing the team’s ups and downs while emphasizing the progress players made in learning to work together and developing their skills.

“We had our ups and downs, and while the results were not exactly what we hoped for, I believe we are moving in the right direction,” Long said. “We have things to build on, and I am proud of the girls for continuing to work and compete throughout the season.”

Long said the team’s biggest improvement came in its ability to function together on the court and continue developing the skills needed to compete. Although the Lady Tigers are still learning, he said they made progress from the beginning of the season to the end.

Consistency remained an area for improvement, particularly in passing, serving and communication.

“We had moments where we played well, but we needed to be able to maintain that level of play more consistently throughout matches,” Long said.

Rather than pointing to one particular victory or highlight, Long said he was encouraged by the team’s continuous competitiveness.

“What stands out to me most is seeing the girls continue to compete and work together, even when things did not go our way,” he said. “Those moments showed me that we have a group that is willing to keep working, and that is something we can continue to build on moving forward.”

The Lady Tigers’ seniors provided experience and leadership throughout the season, helping establish expectations for younger players.

“They helped set the tone for the younger girls and played an important role in our program this season,” he said.

With the seniors moving on, Exeter will look to its returning underclassmen to build on the varsity experience they gained this season.

“They have gained valuable varsity experience this season, and I hope they use that to step into bigger leadership roles next year,” Long said. “We have a foundation to build on, and I am excited to see how they continue to develop.”

Long acknowledged the Lady Tigers did not meet all of their goals this season, particularly in terms of wins and consistency. He said improving fundamentals, strengthening communication and maintaining a commitment to daily improvement will be important steps toward reaching those goals.

Long said next season, Exeter hopes to improve its record, become more consistent and compete at a higher level. Long also wants to see the players develop greater confidence and trust in one another while creating a positive environment around the program.

“Ultimately, we want to keep building the program and create a culture where the girls are excited to come to practice, work hard, and compete,” he said.

Long said developing a competitive program takes time and requires attention to small improvements throughout the season and offseason.

“Although this season did not end exactly how we wanted, I believe we are working in the right direction,” he said. “Building a program takes time, and we have to continue focusing on the little things and getting better every day.”

Exeter’s season ended on Oct. 20 with a 3-set loss to Crane in the Class 1, District 9 tournament.
