Lady Wildcats lock in No. 2 seed

Southwest, Purdy, Wheaton, Exeter girls in postseason action this week

As district basketball tournaments ramp up, Barry County girls hoops squads will put their seasons on the line this week and next.

Cassville’s girls (17-7) earned the No. 2 seed in Class 4, District 12, receiving a bye into the semifinals on March 4 at 7 p.m., awaiting the winner of the No. 3 Mt. Vernon (7-15) versus No. 6 Seneca (10-15) contest being played on March 2 at 7 p.m.
At the top of the bracket, No. 1 Nevada (19-3) awaits the winner of No. 4 East Newton (14-10) and No. 5 Monett (17-8). The Lady Patriots and Lady Cubs play on March 4 at 5:30 p.m., and the semifinal with Nevada is on March 4 at 5:30 p.m. The championship contest is on March 6 at 6 p.m. All games are being played in Nevada.
Cassville has a home win over East Newton, 61-46, an away win over Monett, 57-47, a home win over Seneca, 57-25, and an away win over Mt. Vernon, 56-38. Cassville’s only loss to the field is a 54-40 contest against Nevada at home.
In the Class 1, District 4 tournament in Verona, two local teams played on Monday. No. 5 Exeter (9-15) faced No. 4 Thomas Jefferson (10-14), and No. 3 Wheaton (12-13) battled No. 6 Sheldon (8-16). Also on Monday was No. 2 McAuley (10-16) against No. 7 Verona (6-19). Results of those games were not available at presstime. The Thomas Jefferson-Exeter winner faces No. 1 Liberal (12-13) today (Wednesday) at 5:30 p.m., and the McAuley-Verona and Wheaton-Sheldon winners play in the other semifinal today at 7 p.m. The championship is on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m.
Also on Monday was the first round of the Class 2, District 12 tournament in Marionville. No. 7 Purdy (3-19) took on the No. 2-ranked hosts Marionville (21-5), No. 4 Jasper (15-11) played No. 5 New Heights Christian (14-11), and No. 3 Greenfield/Golden City (16-10) faced No. 6 Billings/Hurley (8-17). The Jasper-New Heights winner takes on No. 1 Miller (23-3) today at 6 p.m., and the Purdy-Marionville and Greenfield/Golden City-Billings/Hurley winners play today at 7:30 p.m. The championship is on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m.
Finally, Southwest (19-7) sees its first postseason action today at Diamond. The No. 3 Lady Trojans take on No. 2 Pierce City (19-7) at 7:30 p.m. No. 4 Sarcoxie (9-14) and No. 5 Diamond (7-19) played on Monday night, with the winner taking on No. 1 Ash Grove (18-8) today at 6 p.m. The championship is at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27.
