Winchell voted tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler

A Cassville girls wrestler basked in the spotlight on Friday, taking first place in her weight class and being voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Analeigh Winchell, a junior who took fourth place at state last season, pinned her way through the 155-pound bracket. Her first four matches did not last more than a minute, with pins in the quarterfinal and semifinal coming in 17 and 9 seconds, respectively. In her championship bout, Winchell, at 27-3 this season, pinned a 22-3 Webb City opponent in 1:20.
“Analeigh had a great tournament,” said Casey Parsons, Cassville girls wrestling coach. “In her semifinal match, the girl scratched Analeigh’s eye. So, she was in extreme pain going into her finals match, but in true Analeigh fashion, she pushed through the pain and pinned the Webb City girl in the first period.
“In the next month, she is going to hone in on conditioning and fine tuning a few things. She was voted ‘Most Outstanding Wrestler’ of the tournament by coaches, and this says a lot since there was 188 girls in this tournament.”
Beyond Winchell’s championship performance, two of Cassville’s other 10 competitors brought home third-place hardware: Isabella Bauman at 100 pounds and Anna Vanderhoef at 145 pounds.
“Isabella and Anna are believing in their abilities and gaining confidence more every day, and that is pushing them to the top in their weight classes. For example, Anna came off the mat after her third-place match in tears — she said these are tears of joy. She pinned a girl from Aurora that had beat her earlier this year.”
Parsons said the tournament was an overall success, and the team is heading in the right direction as the post-season approaches.
“I am proud of the girls overall performance at the Monett tournament even our young girls got some wins and are learning from each match,” Parson said. “All of the girls are working harder each match as we are headed into the last month of season.”
