Myers wins 190-pound bracket, pair of Wildcats take second

The Cassville boys wrestling team put on a program-best third-place performance at the Harrisonville Christmas Tournament on Dec. 19 and 20, with multiple Wildcats bringing home medals.

Leading the way in the results was Zachary Myers at 190 pounds, who finished in first place with a pin of Pacific’s Jordan Krumrey 1:45 into in the title bout. Myers wrestled six total matches at the tournament, getting four pins, a technical fall and one decision.

Two Wildcats finished as runners up in their respective brackets, Tristan Thompson at 165 pounds and Colton Roark at 175 pounds. Thompson lost a 9-7 decision in the title bout against Marlow’s Clint Ladon, and Roark was pinned by Helias Catholic’s Eli Homan in 1:29. It was the first loss of the season in more than 20 matches for each of the wrestlers.

At 150 pounds, Bradyn Sizemore finished in third place. After losing a major decision to Marlow’s Brennen Harris, Sizemore rebounded with a third-place pin of Southern Boone’s Aften Dowler in 4:55.

Other top-six finishes included Boni Lopez and Ethan Sizemore taking fifth place in 113 and 285 pounds, respectively, and Noah Uria and Logan Parsons taking sixth place at 120 and 144 pounds, respectively.

As a team, Cassville finished in third place out of 21 varsity squads and 10 junior varsity teams. Helias Catholic won the event.

Nathan Fortner, Cassville boys wrestling coach, said he was elated with the performance, the best ever for Cassville at the tournament.

“Im really proud of them as a team because we have been going to that tournament for the past three years and this is the best we have ever done at it, bringing home a third-place team trophy,” he said. “We had eight medalists, three finalists, and one champ. Zach had a really good tournament. He’s getting a lot better in the practice room wrestling with Tristan and Colt every day. Tristan won’t see his [finals opponent] again because he’s from Oklahoma, and the kid that beat Colt is the class above us. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
