Scott Mitchell: Responding to evil with the Gospel

The news of Charlie Kirk’s assassination was heartbreaking.

Our hearts hurt not only for the loss of his voice but also for his sweet family. As Christians, our first call is to pray — pray for his family’s comfort, strength and peace that can only come from Jesus Christ.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18.

When we see a life cut short by acts of violence, our flesh may want to rise up in revenge. But the Bible says, “Never pay back evil for evil to anyone… never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God.” Romans 12:17, 19.

God alone is Judge. Our call is to remain faithful not to seek vengeance.

Charlie was passionate about sharing “Truth” and calling people back to God’s design. While his voice has been silenced on Earth, his testimony and legacy will never be. Jesus said, “As long as it is day, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” John 9:4.

His death should inspire us to pick up and carry the torch of the Gospel of Jesus and move it forward with even greater courage, not shrink back in fear or anger.

There is no denying that evil is real. This month, our nation has seen hatred, meanness and division on full display. Some have seen it from their friends and even family. But this is nothing new — the Bible tells us the heart of man “without” God is dark.

“The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick.” Jeremiah 17:9.

What this country needs is not more retaliation, but more salvations — not just louder shouting but louder proclaiming the good news that, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” 1 Timothy 1:15.

So, how should we respond? We pray. We comfort those hurting. And then, we stand renewed with the courage to shine Christ’s light into this dark world.

Jesus reminded us, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14.

Don’t hide, shine bright! Let Charlie’s legacy remind us that our hope was not in him or in this world, but in Jesus.
