Cassville man charged for vehicle thefts
A Cassville man is facing two felonies relating to alleged vehicle thefts in Barry County.
Monte Lucas, 25, of Cassville, is charged with second-degree burglary and stealing – $750 or more.
According to a probable cause statement filed by Deputy Camden Roller, with the Barry County Sheriff’s office, on Sept. 24, authorities conducted a follow- up at a neighboring residence to the location of a theft, where security camera footage obtained allegedly showed Lucas’ vehicle in the area on Sept. 18 at about 8 p.m. On that day, two victims had their vehicles broken into and property stolen.
Roller located Lucas at his residence, and Det. Jeremy Berner, the investigating officer, arrived on the scene. Lucas allegedly informed Berner he was in possession of stolen property and consented to a search of his vehicles on the property.
During the search of a white Pontiac, which was captured on the security cameras on the night of the theft, a pink Xbox controller, valued at $60, was allegedly recovered from the passenger floorboard. The controller was among the items reported stolen from the second victim.
Roller sent a photo of the controller to the victim, who confirmed it to be his. Lucas was then arrested, and he allegedly admitted post-Miranda to breaking into a semi truck and stealing the controller and a Samsug Galaxy Active 5 tablet, valued at $650, used as an electronic logging device in the vehicle. Lucas also allegedly admitted to taking an HP laptop, valued at $1,000.
Lucas said he knew the location of the tablet, saying he threw it into a yard near the residence after breaking into the vehicle. Lucas agreed to accompany Roller and Berner to the location where he said the tablet was thrown, but they were unable to locate the device.
After being transported to the Barry County jail, during an interview with Berner, Lucas allegedly admitted to burglarizing multiple vehicles in the Cassville area. Lucas has one prior offense, pleading guilty to stealing – $750 or more, in December 2023.
Lucas is being held in the Barry County jail on a cash-only bond of $2,500. A bond hearing is scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. in the courtroom of Judge Robert Foulke.
