Media should check drumbeat of rhetoric
Dear Editor:
Recently, I wrote a letter condemning the language used by a staff member of the paper.
My point was that comparing our federal law enforcement to the behavior of the Nazis was inflammatory and dangerous to the people who we pay to enforce laws enacted by congress. That language by people in the media and politicians is taken seriously by many citizens, especially younger ones.
When you call someone “Hitler,” “Nazi,” or “Fascist,” there are those who believe it is the truth. And who wouldn’t have killed the literal Hitler to save millions of lives? Most of the people in the media and politics who do this know that there is no “Hitler” in our government now. They know that conservative, Christian, patriotic Americans aren’t Nazis or fascist. But the people they are talking to believe it.
Now, a young man who listened to this drumbeat that conservatives and Republicans are Hitler, Nazi or Fascist has assassinated a God-loving, son, husband and father for his beliefs.
What did Charlie Kirk do and stand for? Well, he was first and foremost a Christian. He had a wife and two babies. He started a business at 18, the purpose of which was to speak to everyone who wanted to listen and talk.
He went into the dens of radical leftist thought, colleges and universities, and invited everyone, but especially those who didn’t agree with him, to speak.
He knew his subjects. If you have ever listened to him, he had vast knowledge in his head, because he could rapid fire facts on any subject that anyone brought up.
He was hated by the left because he was effective. Young people flocked to him. He had millions who listened to his podcasts both here and abroad.
“Quotes” were cherry picked out of context to make it sound like he had said racist, violent comments. And a target was put on him This time, a young man who believed the political and media rhetoric was successful. We saw it in real time.
In the aftermath, no one in a high profile position on the left has acknowledged that they created this belief that it is ok to commit violence over politics.
A poll by YouGov taken after Kirk was murdered showed 11% said violence can sometimes be justified to achieve political goals, while 72% said violence is never justified.
Saying that violence can be justified was more prominent among Democrats and independents than among Republicans, with 14% of Democrats, 13% of independents and only 6% of Republicans holding that opinion, according to the Sept. 10 poll. On the other end of the scale, 81% of Republicans said violence is never justified, compared with 72% of Democrats and 65% of independents.
This will not stop Kirk’s movement. I read a comment which I shall paraphrase. He said he abandoned the Democrat party when he saw that they would kill his Conservative parents, grandparents and friends simply because they believed differently, and the beliefs were nothing more than what has been common for the entirety of the existence of our country — love of God, family, country.
We don’t agree with many policies the Democrat party wants, but there is never a time when we think it is ok to kill them. We cannot say the same about many of them.
I speak mostly about the media and the political class of Democrats, not most normal citizens. I will include a direct quote from Democrat Senator Chris Murhy, just a week or so ago. “We are in a war right now to save this country,” he said. “And so, you have to be willing to do whatever is necessary in order to save the country.”
However, there have been a shocking number of teachers, professors, medical personnel and others who have now been fired for celebrating the murder. There have been some Democrat and Republican groups in various cities who have met and agreed, this is not the way.
The media must be one of the very first to stop demonizing people who have different beliefs.
I can expect to hear a “both sides” argument to my position. I want to make it clear that we know that somewhere in the internet there are people who are considered a part of the right who make vile statements, and profess ideologies that are disgusting to normal humans.
We thoroughly condemn them. They are, however, not our politicians, or right-leaning media.
The man who murdered Charlie Kirk did what he was told. He went out to be a hero and kill a Nazi.
