Springfield Area 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Saturday

On Saturday, firefighters and civilians from all over will come together in person and virtually to remember those lost on September 11, 2001.

All are invited to Hammons Field, starting at 8:30 a.m., for the Thirteenth Annual Springfield Area Memorial Stair Climb, a commemorative climb to honor the 343 members of the Fire Department of New York who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

More than 343 participants — including members of the Cassville Volunteer Fire Protection District — will climb the stairs of Hammons Field multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the World Trade Center Towers. As part of registration, the participants are asked to raise other funds for Supporting Heroes, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, and Sunshine Brotherhood.

Last year, registered climbers raised over $40,00.00. All proceeds from the registration fees and fundraising donations will be divided among three nonprofit charities. These charities support the families of the 343plus who were directly affected on Sept. 11, 2001, and the first responders and families of those who serve in our local communities, suffering the same fate.

‘We invite you to join us; I promise you it will be a very moving experience,’ an event press release said.

Again, this year, participants have the opportunity to participate in three Missouri-based stair climbs: Clayton 9/11 Stair Climb on Sept. 7; Springfield Memorial Stair Climb on Saturday;, and Missouri 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Jefferson City on Oct. 18. All funds raised will be distributed to the respective charities supported by each of these climbs.
