Sales tax receipts up in August

For the sixth time in seven months, sales tax revenue to Barry County cities rose.

While three cities did not share in the gains in August, larger towns like Monett boosted the total in a month when both Barry and Lawrence counties saw overall gains, contrary to July, when Barry County rose and Lawrence County sums were significantly down.

Cassville saw its 1% sales tax paying for general bills receive $123,932.87, up $901.34 from last August. The sum is significant as a new August record. Prior to 2022, near the end of the pandemic surge in local sales, August receipts had never topped $100,000.

For the year, Cassville’s general fund receipts are up by more than $10,000. Receipts for 2025 from all four of Cassville’s sales taxes and its use tax are up over last year by nearly $49,000.

Monett’s two sales taxes at 1% for its general fund have been suppressed since 2023 by the introduction of the city’s use tax. However, the August disbursement of $230,237.54 is the second highest on record, topped only by the August 2022 peak, when Cassville also saw its receipts spike.

The total was up $26,696.81, or 13%. At the same time, use tax receipts rose by more than $23,000. Monett’s general fund revenues are up by more than $73,000 for the year. Monett’s five active taxes and its use tax have seen income rise in 2025 by more than $235,000 over 2024.

Exeter saw its 1% tax bring in $3,323.98, the third time topping $3,000 this year. That was $269 more than a year ago. Four times this year, Exeter’s tax receipts have varied from 2024 by only a few hundred dollars. The bigger gains have pushed the 2025 total over last year by more than $3,000.

Seligman saw its general fund sales tax receipts fall for the first time in three months. Its 1% tax took in $13,698.92, down $175.58 from a year ago. Except for totals topping $16,000 in 2018, 2020, and 2023, this sum landed in the higher range of August disbursements. It was also the first month Seligman received funds from its new sales tax funding police services Receipts from Seligman’s five sales taxes and its use tax are up for the year by more than $28,000, with $11,000 of that gain coming from the use tax alone.

Purdy’s 1% sales tax produced $6,147.65, down $1,619.20, the fourth drop in five months. Purdy’s general fund receipts for the year are down by more than $10,000.

Washburn saw receipts from its 1% general fund tax erase the red ink last month, taking in $3,644.24, up $336.91 from a year ago. After a two-month suspension in tax receipts ordered by the State Auditor, Washburn’s general fund revenues are down by more than $8,000 from a year ago. Receipts from the city’s three sales taxes and its use tax are down by more than $21,000.

Wheaton saw its 1% sales tax for paying general bills generate $5,513.80, down $579.26 from last August, the first drop in six months. Wheaton’s two sales taxes and its use tax have yielded $14,266.86 more into city coffers this year than in 2024.

The seven Barry County cities collecting sales taxes received $870,674.08 in August, a gain of 7% when comparing the same taxes as last year.

Countywide taxes showed impressive gains as well.

Barry County’s two sales taxes for its general fund at .625% produced $328,017.58 for the month, a gain of $15,720.29, the fourth gain in six months. Receipts for the general fund are up by more than $33,000 from last year’s pace.

The separate .375% sales tax supporting central dispatching and 911 services received $196,809.885 in August, up $9,432.28, or 5%, from last August. That put the 2025 sum up almost $20,000 from a year ago.
