Kristy Brinkman: Washburn leaders address sales tax issue

Dear Editor:

To whom it may concern, the city of Washburn would like to address the articles of late in the Cassville Democrat relating to the recent sales tax issue the city of Washburn has endured.

The city of Washburn was fined. However, the city did receive sales tax money in the month of July with a letter indicating that all fees have been paid with a balance due of zero dollars.

Since this occurred there has been a change in administration, and we are determined not to let this happen again. Please note that fines of this nature appear to be a problem in many small cities, hence, there is a new las that goes into effect surrounding this issue on Aug. 28, 2025.

Additionally, the city is requesting any relief the State Auditor can provide to return some or all of the fines to our citizens.

Thank you.
