Jig On the Water

June 22, 2025

Roaring River is in great shape right now.

The river is now at 96 CFS and this is really a good flow for the river. The dry fly fishing has really gotten good. The last few days there are still lots of Caddis, blue wing olives and a few hoppers on the water already.

Midge activity is very good. We have seen lots of brown and black beetles on the water this year. They have come on strong so they have been catching a lot of fish. Tricos are still pretty good in the morning. They start at daylight and come off to about 9 o’clock.

Crackle backs will catch fish most of the day. I think they work better in the afternoon, but they will catch fish in the mornings.

If you prefer nymphing a copper John, or a pheasant tail nymph, you can probably catch fish most of the day. Small eggs (Glo balls) are still working all day long. Pink San Juan worms have been working pretty much all week if you’d like fishing woolly buggers black has been a good color all week, but there have been plenty caught on olive and tan has been decent off and on.

Plastics are still catching lots of fish. Orange and white worms were very good this week; pink worms were also pretty good; and white worked all week. I am sure other colors worked, but those were what seemed to be working most of the week. If you like fishing PowerBait, the 1-inch grubs have been working very well. The yellow and pink seemed to be working the best. The brown ones seem to work really well up by the hatchery outlets.

If you like the plastic eggs, natural fish oil and shrimp are working very well right now.

As usual, a rooster tail or a rooster tail type spinner works very well first thing in the morning. The best colors this week seem to be black, skunk and brown.

Jig fishing is great right now and will only get better as the water gets lower. Black and yellow, white, olive, and tan caught fish all week. Water is pretty clear right now so I would suggest you use 2-pound monofilament in a moss green, a green tinted or a perfectly clear line.

Good luck on the river this week. Have fun!
