Pollinator Weekend returns to Roaring River

Staff at Roaring River State Park are gearing up to celebrate National Pollinator Week June 20-22. The Roaring River Nature Center will offer programs and handouts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the day.

A full list of events includes: Friday, June 20 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Activities at the Nature Center: Explore the word of pollinators through hands-on crafts and activities and a scavenger hunt.

10 a.m. – Bird-Watching Hike on Pibern Trail: Meet at the trailhead at the back of Campground 1 to look for birds and discover the connections between birds and pollinators. Please bring water and wear sturdy shoes.

3 p.m. – Pollinator Pizza Party: Did you know that pollinators help produce over 35% of the foods we eat every day? Head to the CCC Lodge to learn about the role that pollinators play in food production. There will also be a discussion on whether it’s possible to make pizza without pollinators.

Saturday, June 21 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Activities at the Nature Center: Explore the word of pollinators through hands-on crafts and activities and a scavenger hunt.

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Pollinator Garden Tours: Visit the nature center to take a stroll through the native plants pollinator garden. Discover the importance of providing space for pollinators on your own property and learn how to start a pollinator garden. 10 a.m. – Wildflower Hike: Meet at the special- use area on Highway F to marvel at the native wildflowers on one of Roaring River’s scenic glades. The hike will be about 1 mile on rugged terrain. Please bring water, sturdy shoes and insect repellent.

2 p.m. – Story Time With the Library: Meet staff from the Cassville Library at the nature center for a reading of “Begin With a Bee” by Liza Ketchum, Jacqueline Briggs Martin and Phyllis Root. Then, create a pollinator craft to take home.

8:30 p.m. – Moth Ball: Head to the amphitheater for a whimsical evening celebrating the magic of moths. This program uncovers the incredible roles that moths play in the world. Participants are encouraged to dress up for this program.

Sunday, June 22 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Activities at the Nature Center: Visit the Nature Center to explore the amazing world of pollinators through hands-on crafts and activities and a scavenger hunt.

10 a.m. – Wildflower Hike: Meet at the special- use area on Highway F to marvel at the native wildflowers on one of Roaring River’s scenic glades. We will hike about 1 mile on rugged terrain. Please bring water, sturdy shoes and insect repellent.

3 p.m. – DIY Hummingbird Perch: Visit the nature center to create your very own hummingbird perch and discover some of the best ways to attract hummingbirds to your home!
