Jig on the water

June 28, 2023

Water is clear and low at Roaring River at 12.5 CFS as of Sunday — the dry fly fishing is great right now.

Beetles, ants, caddis, blue wing olives, cahills, griffiths gnats, and hoppers are all working right now, and the use of a 9’ 7X leader is best. Longer leaders are good if you can manage one.

Anglers can still nymph fish, as they don’t need much weight right now in most of the pools. But, if fishing the deeper pools, a No. 4 or a No. 6 shot will sure help get you down.

San Juan worms, mop flies, glo-balls and mega worms are still catching trout.

I usually start the morning with a black, or an olive woolybugger. Marabou jigs are great to right now. The white is great in the morning, and black/yellow, olive and brown have all been good during the day. Plastic baits are still doing very well, like white eggs, pink eggs, white worms, yellow worms and mint green worms.

The gulp yellow, and the gulp pink grubs are still doing very well. Spinners are still good early, for about 30 minutes in black, brown, white, pink and yellow.

The water is still very low, so use a good monofilament line, something moss tinted, or a fluorocarbon, in two-pound. Anglers who do will catch more trout. good luck on the river this week. It’s going to be a hot one!
