Gayla Hall: Southwest School Board Questionnaire

1. Why do you want to win this position?

I want to win this position because I want our students to have the best possible education that we can provide, and I want our teachers, administrators, and staff to have a great and fulfilling career.

My daughter is currently a Junior and my Mother is the High School Business teacher, so I have a lot of investment regarding the school district. I have a lot ideas that I can bring to help improve our School District, and I would like to be able to implement those ideas.

2. If elected, what is your No. 1 goal on the school board?

My number 1 goal is to increase engagement and overall happiness throughout our students and staff. When reaching out to other parents, what I hear the most is that they would like to see more programs and clubs for their students and better quality of our current programs.

3. What areas of the school district do you think need improvement?

There a few areas of improvement that I would like to see including, student and parent engagement, an improved school website, more classes being offered, more teachers and staff hired, better pay for our teachers and staff, and for more avenues for fundraising to be explored.

4. What do you feel is most important for raising the quality of education provided by Southwest schools?

Clear and concise communication, transparency, consistent expectations and disciplinary actions for all students and staff.

5. Taking into account current bond issue construction projects, what other capital projects do you think the school should pursue?

To upgrade our Track and Field. I would like to see bleachers and restroom facilities installed, to purchase the equipment for pole vaulting, to create an area for javelin throwing, upgrade the jumping pits for long and triple jump, and for the track to be up to code, so we can host Track and Field events.

6. Is the district’s communication with parents satisfactory or does it need work? What makes it work, or how would you improve it?

It has definitely gotten better the last few years, once the district implemented the text messaging system, we have much better communication that before. I think some ways we could improve upon that is to upgrade our website and make the school events calendar easier to navigate.

I would like to be able to offer parents to sign up for a monthly text or email that includes all the school’s events for that following month, I think this would help create more parent and community involvement.

7. What classes or programs would you like to see added?

I would like to see Choir, FCCLA, DECA, AV Club, more advanced Art classes like pottery and painting, another Foreign Language, and many more offered at Southwest.

I also think the school should offer a program for parents of upperclassmen that helps with filing for scholarship applications, FASFA, and Trade School applications. I would also to see PTO return to the district.

8. How do you hope to help students succeed after graduation?

I hope to help our students succeed by bringing ideas to the School Board that make Southwest a district that encourages inclusion and offers a diverse catalogue of classes for all students to feel as if their educational needs are met. Success is measured differently by every person, so by offering more classes, programs, clubs, and support, I think we can build confidence for each of our students to find the success that they are seeking.
