Purdy volleyball coach Barry Wheeler reached his 500th win last week with a 2-0 (2519, 25-19) victory over Exeter on Saturday in the Thomas Jefferson Invitational. The Lady Eagles went 2-2 at the tournament and have an overall record of 3-8-2 this season.

Wildcats suffer season’s first loss, prep for Patriots
The Cassville football team met the same fate against Seneca on Friday as each of the two teams who had played the Indians already — shut out and giving up at least five scores. Clay Weldy, Cassville football coach, said Seneca is a force in the district, helped by Wildcat mistakes on Friday in a 44-0 Cassville loss on the road.

Less Hugheses, but not Hughes-less
Purdy fall baseball has begun, and fans of the Eagles will notice a major difference in this year’s roster — only one Hughes listed. For eight of the last nine years, Purdy Coach Joshua Hughes has had a son, or two, playing for him.
Wheaton volleyball relying on youth
With two sophomores offering the most returning varsity experience to the Wheaton volleyball team, the Lady Bulldogs are finding their footing as a squad this season. Cheyanne Gudgell, in her first year as head coach in Wheaton, said the team’s goals this season are simple.

Cassville pushes past Aurora in gritty contest
The Cassville football team overcame a slate of second-half adversity to secure its second win over the season on Friday, defeating Aurora, 22-19. Physicality was the Wildcats’ biggest worry going into the game, and the contest was a gritty battle to the final snap.

6 seniors lead deep Wildcats squad
Following its first winning season and first playoff win in a decade, the Cassville boys soccer team is entering a new era. Led this season by six seniors and eight returning starters, the Wildcats have set their goals higher than ever.

The Cassville softball team will play its first regular-season home tilt on Thursday, taking on Marshfield at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Wildcats have struggled against stiff competition in the season’s early goings. In the 29th Annual Morrisville Tournament, Cassville topped West Plains, 10-3. Since that Aug. 25 matchup, the Lady Wildcats have eluded victory, falling to Sherwood, 4-0; Carthage, 4-1; Carl Junction, 8-4; and Nevada, 14-0. Cassville played Logan-Rogersville on the road Tuesday after presstime and faces Marshfield Thursday.
