50 YEARS AGO: FINAL INTERSECTION SURVEY — It probably won’t be long before the intersection pie and multi-sign direction posts in the south part of Cassville will disappear. Highway department crews were busy when this picture was made Tuesday, making the final survey tor plans of intersection improvements.

Mitchell retires from Mercy after 30 years
Mercy Hospital employee Lisa Mitchell retired last week after 30 years of service to the facility. Mitchell started at Mercy in 1995 after being contracted since 1988 as a physical therapist. She has four children, Jessica, Caleb, Michaela and Shannon, and she has been married to Charlie Mitchell for 44 years, and the couple reside in Seligman. 50 YEARS AGO: NO MORE FOR THIS YEAR — The fescue seed harvest in Barry County is over. No more will this scene, augering seed from a combine into a truck be repeated for real in 1975. Growers and buyers agree this year, while not the best season on record, produced about a 70% crop for the area. High quality seed also saw the price increase twice since the start four weeks ago. Closing seed prices were 14 cents in this area. In the photo above, during the closing days of the harvest, Nolan McNeill, a custom harvester is pictured on his combine, as son, Nolan IlI, waits for the emptying process before driving the seed to a market location.

Stones Prairie raffling quilt at picnic
The Stones Prairie Lutheran Church Picnic will be held July 18 starting at 6 p.m. at the church, located at 5732 Farm Road 1057 in Purdy. The meal includes hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, homemade pies, ice cream and chips.

Novel study leads to lemonade stand, Haven donation
Third grade students participating in summer school recently completed a novel study of “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies. As part of the unit, students explored basic economic concepts such as supply and demand, marketing, and profit — all while learning how to run a small business.

30 YEARS AGO: BALLOON GLOW — Over 2,000 attended Friday night’s balloon glow at the FASCO rounds. A horn blew and the pilots would blast not air into the balloons. The propane flame lit up the balloons against the night sky. The three hot air balloon races held on Saturday and Sunday also drew big crowds. Rides in the balloons seemed to be the coveted prize to win during weekend giveaways. People also had the opportunity to view the balloons up close and meet the pilots.
