Southwest middle school track shines

The Southwest Middle School track team wrapped up a highly successful season with 28 student-athletes competing throughout the spring.

The team saw major success at the Blue Eye regular season meet and the SWCL Conference Meet, where Southwest swept all four divisions by earning team championships in 7th grade girls, 7th grade boys, 8th grade girls, and 8th grade boys. In total, Southwest athletes brought home 76 medals during the SWCL meet at Blue Eye.

The 7th grade boys team had an especially dominant year, earning first place finishes at both Blue Eye meets. Individually, 7th grader Zaylon Corwin captured four conference championships in the 400 meter dash, 800 meter dash, 1600 meter run, and long jump. Demi Roe also had an outstanding conference performance, earning gold medals in the 400, 800, and 1600 meter runs, along with a silver medal in the long jump.

Southwest’s relay teams proved to be a major strength. The 8th grade boys won conference titles in both the 4×100 relay (Bawi Cung, Joe Henry, Layton Cole, and Easton Wilson) and 4×400 relay (Layton Cole, Joe Henry, Michael Henry, and Easton Wilson). The 8th grade girls also earned gold medals in the 4×100 relay (Jaelyn Wright, Alana Smith, Georgia King, and Olivia Tedford) and 4×400 relay (Kasey Stailey, Jaelyn Wright, Alana Smith, and Olivia Tedford).

Several school records were also broken this season. The 7th grade boys 4×100 relay team of Brodie Hall, Silas Turner, Tripp Pippin, and Zaylon Corwin broke a record that had stood since 1989. Jaelyn Wright set a new 8th grade girls shot put record, while Olivia Tedford broke the 8th grade girls triple jump record. Joe Henry also broke the 8th grade boys triple jump record.

Head Coach Jordy Long praised the athletes for their hard work, dedication, and team success throughout the season.
