Southwest trap team claims state championship

Squad turns in 468/500 performance to take top honors

The Southwest Trap Team rose to the top of Missouri high school trapshooting this weekend, capturing the state championship with a team score of 468 out of 500.

Competing against more than 200 squads from across the state, the team delivered a performance that set them apart as the best in Missouri.

The championship squad — Levi Carden, Dakota Cotton, Jesse Jones, Layten Cole and Riley Phillips — led the team with consistent, high-level shooting throughout the competition.

Individually, Carden turned in an exceptional performance, finishing as the overall runner-up. Carden shot a perfect 100 straight before advancing to a 50-target shoot-off to determine final placement.

Cole also had a standout day, placing third in the Junior High division. Cole shot a 97 and secured his podium finish through reverse scoring, while also recording his first career 50 straight.

Hayden Rockwell added to the team’s success with a personal-best score of 91, highlighting continued growth and improvement within the program.

The team also consists of shooters: Mike Freeman, Brooklynn Freeman, Dylan Cope, Cooper Hendrix and Callie Cope, who all turned in strong performances.

“While they finished just outside of buckle positions, their ability to stay composed and finish strong after challenging rounds showed grit and determination,” a team press release said. “With both individual achievements and a state title to celebrate, the Southwest trap team’s performance marks a significant accomplishment and a proud moment for the district.”
