The Cassville girls wrestling team won its first tournament of the season on Friday, with four Lady Wildcats taking top honors in the inaugural Cassville Tournament at the FEMA Event Center.

Kennedy Truman won first place at 120 pounds, Faith James was first at 135 pounds, Hailey Roark took the gold at 140 pounds, and Analeigh Winchell was the winner at 145 pounds.

As a team, the Lady Wildcats won the nine-team event with 151 points, ahead of Greenwood’s 80 and Clinton’s 75.

Nathan Fortner, Cassville wrestling coach, was happy with the results.

“It was a great day for the girls and the wrestling program as a whole to win our first annual tournament, which included 8 additional teams,” he said. “I think each girl from top to bottom had individual moments where they showed great improvement. They are a hard working group with some great leaders on the team.”

Fortner said the victory is a confidence-builder, but should be taken with a grain of salt given the level of competition coming down the pike.

“I think it builds our team’s confidence, but their schedule is about to get a whole lot tougher,” he said. “This Friday and Saturday, the girls travel to Eldon, where there will be a tournament of 30 different teams competing. The following tournament they will be in the Wonder Woman tournament.”

Cassville also wrestled on Monday in the Nixa Invite, placing third as a team. James won first at 135; second-place medals went to Riley Stumpff at 100, Roark at 145 and Winchell at 155; and Breanna Gordon took third at 125.
