Stamp Out Hunger food drive fills pantry shelves

Cassville Post Office collects 1,240 pounds of food in annual drive
May 9 was designated for Stamp Out Hunger, the USPS sponsored food drive.
Stamp Out Hunger is held each year on the second Saturday of May and is the country’s largest single-day food drive. Residents were given a blue grocery bag in their mailbox and asked to leave nonperishable food donations by their mailbox for the mail carrier to pick up for distribution.
All donations will be given out to residents in Barry County assisting our neighbors facing hunger and helping them keep meals on the table. The residents of Cassville offered a generous response in support of the food drive which resulted in a collection of 1,240 pounds of food.
Janet Mills, Cassville Pantry director, extends gratitude to all who donated food items to the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
“Greatly appreciated was the time and effort put forth by Postmaster Cheryl Jewers and the Cassville Post Office letter carriers for their commitment to helping collect food donations,” Mills said. “This boost in resources will help replenish the shelves at the food pantry. New visitors and more of them have recently been seeking out food assistance. Many families are struggling to make ends meet due to current economic challenges including increased gas and grocery prices.”
In April alone, Cassville Pantry served 572 families, comprised of 1,746 people, with food boxes. This escalation in demand reached a peak high volume of persons seeking help with groceries matched only historically during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cassville Pantry is located at 800 W. 10th St. For additional information about hours and services phone 417-846-7871 or refer to the Pantry website at https://www.cassvillepantry.com.
