Sportsman’s Corner under new management

New owner aims to update inventory, offer firearms

A new chapter has begun for Sportsman’s Corner, as local resident Garrett Hoppes has stepped in as the store’s new owner, bringing both years of experience and passion for the outdoor business.

Hoppes, who grew up just outside of Exeter, said his background in hunting and fishing led him to the opportunity. He previously worked for five years at Roaring River, where he handled inventory in a store and gained valuable knowledge about outdoor retail.

“I have always wanted my own tackle shop, and my dad wanted one too, so we kind of worked together to make this happen,” Hoppes said

The opportunity to purchase the store came through a connection with the previous owner, whom Hoppes said his family knew well. Taking over at the beginning of the year, Hoppes officially became the new owner on Jan. 6

The store previously operated partially as a pawn shop, and Hoppes said he plans to shift its focus more toward outdoor goods and away from pawn. He plans to rearrange the store layout, expand inventory and increase advertising to bring in more customers.

Hoppes added he plans to speak to customers to see what inventory changes they would like to see, and he also plans to change what food items are offer, and increase the amount of fishing tackle sold at the store.

Hoppes is also in the process of obtaining a federal firearms license, which will allow the store to sell firearms in the future. He said hunting rifles will be the main types of guns stocked, and he plans to offer pistols, as well.

While the updates are still in the works, Hoppes emphasized that long-term customers can expect a sense of familiarity.

“We’re not getting rid of them, that’s for sure,” he said. “We just hope to expand and get more people in here.”

For Hoppes, owning a business in Cassville is both a personal and professional milestone.

“It feels good to work for yourself.” He said

With plans to grow, Hoppes hopes aims to not build away from the store’s foundation, rather, to build off of it.
